The job, honestly

What an RBT actually does every day.

You'll work one-on-one with a child for most of your shift, running a play-based ABA program written by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). No paperwork mountain. No call center scripts. Real kids, real progress, every session.

Run the session

Lead structured play, language drills, and natural-environment teaching. The BCBA writes the plan — you bring it to life with the child in front of you.

Collect clean data

Tap counts and prompts into our tablet app as you go. Honest data is how kids actually progress — we train you to take it without breaking the flow of the session.

Talk with parents

A short hand-off at pickup — what went well, what's next. You're the family's most consistent point of contact.

Work alongside your BCBA

Weekly supervision built into your schedule — not crammed into Sunday nights. Bring the questions; we bring the coaching.

Celebrate small wins

First word. First independent request. First time tying a shoe. RBTs see the moments parents wait years for.

A real shift

Most sessions fall inside business hours. Full-time is 32–38 billable hours plus paid prep and supervision.

The path to RBT

From application to your first session — about 4–6 weeks.

The 40-hour training is the gate, not the goal. We move you through it deliberately so you walk into your first session confident, not crammed.

1 1

Apply & interview

A short application, then a 30-minute video chat with our hiring lead and a BCBA. We're looking for warmth, patience, and a willingness to learn — not an ABA résumé.

2 2

40-hour training

Online, self-paced, BACB-approved. We cover the cost. Most candidates finish in 2–3 weeks while working a current job.

3 3

Competency assessment

A BCBA observes you running the core skills in person. Pass it once, sign your offer, get on payroll.

4 4

RBT exam

$45 exam fee paid to the BACB. We schedule it, prep you with mock questions, and you start full RBT shifts the next week.

Why On Target ABA

The same job at the corporate chain — but the people are different.

We were founded in 2022 by a BCBA, not a private equity firm. That means lower caseloads, faster answers, and a real path forward if you want one. Quality care without the wait — that goes for our hiring too.

  • BCBA-led mentorship. Weekly 1:1s with your supervisor, not a quarterly check-in.
  • Free 40-hour training. We pay for the coursework. You keep your certificate either way.
  • Tuition assistance. For RBTs pursuing a BCaBA or BCBA, where applicable.
  • Lower caseloads. Our BCBAs hold smaller caseloads than the big chains — so you get real coaching.
  • Benefits for full-time. Health, dental, vision, and paid time off when you cross the FT threshold.
  • $18–$22 / hr starting. Honest range for Utah and Ohio. Goes up with experience, certifications, and lead-trainer roles.

FAQ

Questions we get from most applicants.

Do I need ABA experience or a psychology degree?+

No. About half our RBTs come from teaching, paraprofessional work, childcare, or are college students — the other half are career changers from completely unrelated fields. We require a high school diploma or GED, age 18+, and a background check. Everything else, we teach.

Is the 40-hour training really free?+

Yes — we cover the BACB-approved coursework. You're only responsible for the $45 exam fee paid directly to the BACB when you sit for the certification. There is no payback clause if you leave.

Can I work part-time or do I need to commit to full-time?+

Both work. Part-time is great for students — afternoon and after-school sessions fit class schedules well. Full-time is 32–38 billable hours per week and unlocks benefits (health, dental, vision, PTO).

What hours will I actually work?+

Most shifts are between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Younger children typically come mornings, school-age kids come afternoons. We don't run weekend or overnight sessions.

If I want to become a BCBA someday, will you help?+

That's the whole point of working here. We provide BCBA supervision hours, tuition assistance for the master's degree when applicable, and a clear RBT → Senior RBT → BCaBA → BCBA progression. Several of our current BCBAs started as RBTs.
